NNZA: Alternative Fuel Injectors for Decarbonising Powertrains in Heavy Transport.

Project Lead: Dr Ebrahim Nadimi

Institution: Durham University.

Partners: Heinzmann UK Limited.

Amount: £ 54k

Scheme: Commercialising Innovation.

Theme/Area: Low Carbon Energy Generation/Hydrogen.

Brief Description: This 12-month Durham University–Heinzmann UK project will translate e-fuel spray and combustion research into market-ready liquid injector and nozzle designs for green methanol and ammonia. The programme will produce engine-representative spray datasets, co-design two injector families, manufacture alpha and beta prototypes, and achieve TRL 8 validation. Key outputs include a patent application, functional prototype injectors, and a defined adoption and market-entry strategy targeting rail and marine applications via Heinzmann’s commercial network. The project will strengthen advanced injector capability and supply-chain activity in Teesside and Middlesbrough while accelerating decarbonisation of hard-to-electrify heavy transport sectors.
