NNZA: Heat Loss Detection and Management in UK Housing Using Computer Vision.

Project Lead: Dr Zhuang Shao

Institution: Newcastle University.

Partners: Newcastle City Council.

Amount: £ 30k

Scheme: Ideas Translation

Theme/Area: Low Carbon Energy Generation/Policy Development.

Brief Description: This project will develop an intelligent computer vision system for the automated detection and visualisation of household heat loss. By analysing thermal and visual imagery, the tool will identify areas of heat loss, estimate associated energy inefficiencies, and generate clear, explainable reports. The approach offers a faster, lower-cost, and more scalable alternative to conventional energy audits, enabling homeowners, local authorities, and retrofit providers to assess insulation performance and prioritise interventions. The solution will support Warm Homes initiatives in the North East by assisting councils in identifying inefficient properties and evaluating retrofit outcomes, contributing to regional decarbonisation objectives.
