NNZA: Innovative Microgrid Power And Control Technology For Sustainable Datacentres (IMPACTS).

Project Lead: Dr Mahmoud Shahbazi.

Institution: Durham University.

Partners: Red Engineering Design Ltd.

Amount: £ 29K

Scheme: Ideas Translation.

Theme/Area: Integration into End Use Sectors/ Grid Networks.

Brief Description: Datacentres account for 2% of global emissions and 2.5% of the UK’s electricity use. London’s hubs face grid constraints, with power demand potentially rising six-fold by 2035 due to AI. Durham University developed techniques for microgrid design and operation, achieving up to 18% cost reductions in design and 5% in operations. With interest from RED Engineering, this proposal aims to create tools to minimise waste, enhance efficiency, and integrate datacentre microgrids into current infrastructure.
