NNZA: Installation of high-performance drag embedment anchors for floating offshore wind - a proof of concept.

Project Lead: Professor William Coombs.

Institution: Durham University.

Partners: Cathie Associates Limited.

Amount: £ 27K

Scheme: Ideas Translation.

Theme/Area: Low Carbon Energy Generation/ Onshore/Offshore Wind and Subsea.

Brief Description: The UK aims for 40GW of floating offshore wind by 2050, needing ~2,700 turbines and ~8,000 anchors. High-performance Drag Embedment Anchors (DEAs) are cost-effective but face feasibility issues as they scale for larger turbines (15MW+). This project, with Cathie Engineers, will use Durham University’s software to study how installation forces vary with anchor size and soil conditions.
