NNZA: Low Friction Coatings for Reduced Environmental Impact and Fuel Efficiency.

Project Lead: Professor Matthew Unthank.

Institution: Northumbria University.

Partners: Akzo Nobel Coatings International BV.

Amount: £ 54K

Scheme: Commercialising Innovation.

Theme/Area: Integration into End Use Sectors/Net Zero/Circular Economy Transition (eg. products, supply chain, end-users).

Brief Description: This project will deliver a new and transformative innovation into the low-friction (non-stick) marine coatings market, the impact of which will be a significant (~25%) reduction in materials, solvents and emissions associated with the application of these coatings. In addition to this, the new technology will reduce the global CO2 footprint of the shipping industry through market growth of low-friction coatings, driven by scheme simplification and cost reduction.
