NNZA: Seasonal Energy from Abandoned Mines (SEAM).

Project Lead: Professor Jeroen Van Hunen

Institution: Durham University.

Partners: Durham County Council, TownRock Energy.

Amount: £ 29k

Scheme: Ideas Translation.

Theme/Area: Low Carbon Energy Generation/Geothermal.

Brief Description: SEAM will develop a tool to enable the large-scale commercial deployment of seasonal mine heat storage in Northeast England by key stakeholders, including energy companies, local authorities, and government bodies. Building on the research team’s GEMSToolbox software and datasets provided by project partners Townrock Energy and Durham County Council, the tool will assess the potential of abandoned mines as thermal energy storage assets. SEAM will support the evaluation and prioritisation of suitable sites, reducing technical risk and capital costs, and will promote the growth of geothermal energy through industry–academia collaboration.
