NNZA: Waste Shell-Derived Combined Sorbent-Catalyst Materials for Sustainable Hydrogen Production through Biogas Reforming.

Project Lead: Dr Shadab Alam

Institution: Teesside University.

Partners: AVGO Biotech.

Amount: £ 28k

Scheme: Ideas Translation

Theme/Area: Low Carbon Energy Generation/Hydrogen.

Brief Description: The project demonstrates a sustainable green H2 production pathway that integrates regional biogas with renewable wind energy via innovative sorption-enhanced reforming. The innovation lies in the synthesis of novel waste-derived (snail/eggshell) combined sorbent-catalyst materials (CSCMs). The CSCMs will be produced using AVGO Biotech’s low-carbon Rec-egg process with bipolar electrodialysis, resulting in a 50-70% reduction in CO2 footprint compared to conventional limestone-derived CaCO3. CSCMs will be synthesised (5kg-scale) and tested in NZIIC’s fixed-bed reactor system. Lab-scale biogas reforming will be carried out at a 100g CSCM loading, including alternate reforming and regeneration (wind-powered) over 100 cycles to establish material stability and enhance CO2 capture efficiency.
